Implementation
Drama structures the curriculum into a 3-year Key Stage 3 and a 2-year KS4.
Subject specialists have given consideration and thought to the sequence and rationale of the curriculum; why we teach the content we do and in the order that we do. This is to ensure knowledge is not isolated information; it is connected knowledge that enables comprehension.
At Key Stage 3, the full National Curriculum is delivered. The Drama curriculum is organised into topics of lessons. Each topic of lessons builds on prior knowledge allowing connections to be made and enables knowledge to be transferable. In Drama we believe this facilitates deeper comprehension. The topics of content taught is chosen so lessons focus on developing deeper understanding and capacity for skilful performance.
At Key Stage 4, the full AQA GCSE Drama is delivered. Content is structured into units of lessons. We do not ‘teach to the test.’ The curriculum is designed to ensure students build on knowledge, understanding and skills relating to drama and theatre.
- Component 1 – Understanding Drama - focuses on drama terminology and roles and responsibilities in the theatre, a theoretical and practical approach to the text of Blood Brothers and opportunities to analyse and evaluate live theatre.
- Component 2 – Devising Drama - consists of a practical element whereby students create their own work from a stimulus and also produce a devising written logbook (2500 words).
- Component 3 – Texts in Practice - students must choose one play with 2 extracts that contrast and perform to a visiting examiner, pupils need to interpret the text, create and communicate meaning and also realise artistic intention in text-based drama.
Each lesson builds on prior learning, allowing connections to be made between content Units have been organised and designed to promote learning and provide depth and breadth of understanding
Student voice has been conducted to ensure that students have a contribution to the curriculum content. This has resulted in Gangs being introduced.
