New Build Works Commence

In February 2021, Deyes High School was one of the first fifty schools in the UK and the only secondary school in the Liverpool City Region to secure investment from the Department for Education School Rebuilding Programme.

Deyes High School and Lydiate Learning Trust have been working closely with the Department for Education and appointed contractor Kier Construction to develop a proposal which meets Deyes High School’s educational needs. Following community consultation and planning, the final designs, including building interiors were approved on 8 June.

Deyes High School, based in Maghull, is a large and popular school and Sixth Form with over 1,400 students. The school campus comprises various buildings of varying age and materials which will be replaced by a brand new 10,000m² building spanning three floors. The innovative learning environment will use the latest digital technologies.

Facilities include high tech classrooms, specialist science labs, a learning resource centre, and an art studio, a Multi-Use Games Area, large playing fields and sports pitches, dance and drama studios and a fitness suite. The modern College@Deyes sixth form building will be retained as part of the project.

The new building will be net zero carbon in operation and will feature a green roof, solar panels, treble glazed windows, and air source heating pumps to avoid dependency on fossil fuels. The large green site will benefit from new features including a wildlife garden, a nature trail, and a habitat area to support learning and encourage students to connect with nature to boost their wellbeing.

Ann Stahler, CEO and Executive Headteacher of Lydiate Learning Trust commented: “This is a hugely exciting project for Lydiate Learning Trust. The new Deyes High School building will help us deliver our ethos to engage, enable and empower. The new build will be a true flagship school for our Trust and the Maghull community.”

Mrs. Beaney, Head of School, added: “We are delighted that Deyes High School has secured investment for the new build which will help us to build on our tradition of ambitious standards and expectations. We are proud of our school’s history and achievements and the new state-of-the-art school will be a red brick building to reflect our heritage. Our students and local community will benefit hugely from the new learning, sports, arts, and outdoor facilities.”

Student Lily-May said: “The new build is a fantastic opportunity for students who attend this school because the bright, modern building will motivate students and improve attitudes to learning. It is a magnificent plan.”

Sean Fenner, Regional Director at Kier Construction North and Scotland said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this net zero carbon school for the Department for Education and the local community of Maghull. Net Zero is high on everyone’s agenda and we are thrilled to be encompassing this within the design and build of this new facility.”

The new build commenced in August 2022 and will open in Spring 2024. Demolition of the old school buildings will start in Spring 2024 and all work, including new sports facilities, will be completed by Spring 2025.
