Vision

We believe in empowering our students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Our comprehensive IT 7 Computer Science curriculum is designed to prepare students for success in the dynamic world of technology, emphasising not just technical proficiency, but also a vigilant and informed approach to using digital tools. We aspire to stimulate and motivate learners in understanding Computational Thinking, ICT Skills, promote creativity, learn programming basics and use this knowledge and skills to create digital content and systems.

Curriculum Intent

KS3 - Our IT and Computer Science department provides a robust foundation for students in Key Stage 3, ensuring they are well-prepared for the digital challenges of the future. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students delve into the realm of digital literacy, gaining a profound understanding of how to navigate and utilise technology responsibly. In this stage, we introduce students to both block-based and text-based programming languages, fostering their problem-solving skills and creativity. Hands-on exploration of hardware components deepens their understanding of the inner workings of computers, while delving into the intricacies of binary code; the language that underpins digital systems. Emphasising the importance of online safety, we equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital landscape securely. Our curriculum also delves into the fascinating world of algorithms, encouraging students to think critically and logically. Moreover, an exploration of computer networks introduces an understanding of how information is communicated between systems.

KS4 – At Key Stage 4, students are taken on an advanced journey into the details of information technology, preparing them for a seamless transition into the professional world. Students delve into the architecture of CPUs, gaining a deep understanding of how processing power drives the heart of computing. Exploration of memory and storage systems provides insight into optimising data handling, ensuring our students are adept at managing vast datasets. The curriculum extends to the complexities of computer networks, emphasising their structure but also delving into network security to instil the importance of safeguarding digital assets. Understanding systems software becomes paramount as students navigate the landscape of operating systems and applications. Ethical, legal, and cultural considerations in IT allows students to be responsible and culturally aware when using technology. We develop students Python programming skills, encouraging students to create robust solutions to real-world problems. Project management skills are honed, ensuring students can navigate complex IT projects efficiently. Development of interfaces, practical applications of Excel, and a keen insight into how successful companies use IT.

KS5 - At Key Stage 5, students study the fundamentals of hardware, gaining an understanding of cutting-edge technologies shaping computing. Network architecture is studied in-depth, emphasising the critical role networks play in the connectivity of modern systems. Software development introduces advanced programming languages and the creation of applications. Ethical considerations in computing are considered throughout the curriculum, fostering a deep sense of responsibility in the use of technology. Students analyse the functionality of information within organisations, exploring how data is stored, processed, and utilised to inform decision-making processes. Practical application allows students to produce interactive websites, developing functional applications, and diving into the intricacies of computer game design. Algorithmic thinking is refined, laying the foundation for students to approach complex problem-solving with a systematic mindset. Object-oriented programming enables students to create solutions to real-world problems. Security and encryption also equips students with the knowledge and skills to safeguard digital assets.
