Empowering Futures: Celebrating International Women’s Day
In celebration of International Women’s Day, Deyes High School students had the unique opportunity to learn from successful women across a variety of sectors. The event featured an impressive lineup of guests, including education, healthcare, environmental services, fashion and entrepreneurs.
Throughout the event, the accomplished women networked with small groups of students to discuss their journeys to success, the challenges they have overcome and the importance of perseverance in achieving their goals. Despite their diverse backgrounds and industries, a common thread ran through each speaker’s advice: professionalism, drive, and determination are key to reaching your aspirations.
Katie Bowaters, Managing Director of Katie Bowater Ltd said: “It’s so important for young women to see successful female leaders in a range of industries. Events like this help them realize that there are no limits to what they can achieve.”
Alicia McGrath, Talent and Careers Officer at the Alzheimer’s Society and College@Deyes alumnus said: “Passion and resilience are essential in any career. I hope today’s event has inspired students to chase their dreams and believe in their potential.”
Students were left feeling inspired and motivated by the discussions. Florence from Year 8 said: “Hearing from so many successful women showed me that no dream is too big. If they can achieve their goals, so can we.” Student Ellise added: “I enjoyed hearing about the different career paths the speakers took, including career pivots to follow their passions. It made me realize that success isn’t always a straight line, and it’s important to do a job you enjoy.”
Mrs. Beaney, Headteacher, explained: “Events like this play a crucial role in signposting students to potential futures by providing real-world insights and networking opportunities. Hearing directly from professionals across various industries allows students to broaden their horizons and gain a deeper understanding of the skills and qualities needed to succeed in their chosen fields.”
