No To Negativity

No To Negativity

This half-term we launched our “No to Negativity” campaign. The campaign is a school wide anti-bullying initiative to ensure we create a learning environment that is safe and secure for all students at Deyes High School.

We used training and research from national charity, the Anti-Bullying Alliance, to refresh our approach to bullying behaviour within school.

Here at Deyes one our core school values is Respect For Others. All students are required to show respect and value all individuals for their diverse backgrounds, experiences, styles, approaches, ideas and beliefs.

Those who do not buy into this core school value are compromising the learning environment we wish to create. This is why we have used the research and case studies provided from the Anti-Bullying Alliance to review our school Anti-Bullying policy and launch our own ‘No to Negativity’ campaign!

Our ‘No to Negativity’ campaign data informed approach to tackling bullying behaviour utilises our school behaviour system to track and monitor trends in bullying behaviour in school. This approach allows the school pastoral team to intercept and tackling bullying behaviour early with adequate evidence and to escalate concerns.

The ‘No to Negativity’ campaign was created after feedback from student voice last half-term. Advice from the Anti-Bullying Alliance, who are funded by the Department for Education, informed us that any effective anti-bullying policy was created with the voice of students at the heart of it.
Our students informed us they would like staff to take action on bullying without them having to disclose it to an adult and more education around bullying to encourage positive student behaviour.

The ’No to Negativity’ campaign takes the burden of having to report everything off the student who may fear escalating bulling.

How does it work?
  • All staff updated on Anti-bullying training. Educated on the signs of bullying and those most at risk.
  • Teachers will be vigilant to negative interactions no matter how big or small and use School Synergy to report negative interactions with peers. This includes verbal abuse, name-calling, physical abuse, or intimidating peers.
  • Report to be produced each week of number of negative interactions per student.
  • Three or more cases of negative interactions will be treated as student demonstrating bullying behaviour.
What happens next?
  • Pastoral team will use the data collected to take a range of disciplinary steps in response to bullying behaviour; these include:
  • Internal isolation / Suspension / Official meeting with School police officer / governors meeting regarding future at our school / communication with parents / restorative conference.

An important part of our 'No to Negativity' campaign is raising awareness to staff, students, and parentson the ways in which bullying behaviour can reported and addressed in school. As any effective bullying policy relies upon consistent communication.

How can your child report bullying?
