History

“History cannot give a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.” Professor Robert penn Warren, American poet, novelist, and literary critic

Vision

The History Department seeks to inspire a lifelong love of history and an appreciation of its relevance, using active learning strategies where appropriate. We aim to spark curiosity about the past that continues well beyond the classroom.

We are committed to delivering a fully inclusive and challenging curriculum that engages all learners, celebrates diverse experiences, and builds resilience. Through this, students will develop the historical knowledge and understanding needed to make sense of the world around them today.

Curriculum Intent

Building on our vision to spark a lifelong curiosity about the past, the History Department is committed to delivering a curriculum that is inclusive, ambitious, and accessible to all students. We aim to ensure that every learner — regardless of background or need — is supported to enjoy and succeed in history, developing the knowledge and skills that will help them understand the world around them.

We nurture students’ ability to think critically and independently, embedding historical concepts such as cause and consequence, continuity and change, and significance. Learners will be taught how to frame meaningful enquiry questions, test interpretations, and analyse sources with confidence. They will develop the ability to write structured essays, craft analytical narratives, and sustain arguments based on evidence.

Our curriculum empowers students to ask perceptive questions, evaluate competing perspectives, and form well-reasoned judgements. Through a rich and diverse exploration of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, students will gain a coherent understanding of how societies evolve and how their own identities are shaped. Above all, we aim to make history relevant, engaging, and meaningful for every learner.
