Maths

“Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.” – David Hilbert

Vision

Mathematics is a highly interconnected discipline that provides students with the life skills necessary to become functional, numerate members of society. Developing a growth mindset through deeper thinking and risk taking will allow the students to gain enjoyment and curiosity about mathematics. Students are equipped with the belief that with hard work they can achieve. All students are encouraged to have a ‘can do’ attitude and are regularly challenged to think independently and reason mathematically.

Curriculum Intent

At Deyes High School, our curriculum is designed to build resilience and encourage students to thrive when faced with challenges. We hold high aspirations for all learners and provide a flexible curriculum that allows teachers to stretch and challenge every student effectively.

By the end of each Key Stage, students will have engaged with a culturally rich curriculum and will have mastered the declarative, procedural, and conditional knowledge necessary to progress confidently to the next stage of their education.

Each series of lessons includes:

  • Effective questioning that promotes oracy and critical thinking
  • Checking for understanding, ensuring tailored feedback and responsive instruction
  • Problem-solving tasks designed to reinforce retrieval and strengthen key National Curriculum concepts
  • Tasks that foster deep thinking, resilience, and the ability to reason and articulate mathematical understanding
  • Disciplinary literacy that enables students to use correct mathematical language

Students join Deyes High School as capable mathematicians, and this ambitious curriculum is designed to build on their strengths and support their continued success.
