Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.

Curriculum Intent

The Design and Technology curriculum is designed to ensure that our pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Inspire creativity and imagination, designing products that solve real and relevant problems.

The subject of Design Technology encourages problem solving, innovation, planning and evaluation as autonomous learners that will allow them to access the GCSE which is based on iterative design processes.

In Engineering students will develop the specific knowledge and skills learners need to work successfully in the engineering industry, such as:

  • Discovering the world of engineering and how it impacts on our world today,
  • Communication skills to articulate and discuss new ideas or work as a team to solve problems
  • Health and safety in the workplace and the appropriate procedures and legislation

Our KS3 curriculum builds upon the legal entitlement for D&T delivered at KS2. We develop existing skills and knowledge to ensure learners have an understanding of materials, tools, equipment and the confidence to apply it appropriately.
